Good morning:)
I wanted to give yall an update this morning on our First Top Picks from the PTO Expo – Harlem Wizards Fundraiser Show.
This last Thursday, I sat down with your AD and we talked about what it’d take for us to put this together. The last time we spoke, he said I should do it for the swim team because it’d be a great fundraiser (I was heart was dancin’ at this prospect!). Thursday, when we sat down to look it over and look at the specifics of what we needed it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be for us.
Let me start by saying, there is another school about 45 minutes from here that does this every year and they make BANK on this one. Their 1,200 seats sell out in a matter of days. People come from all over to attend their event. So it must be pretty awesome. We have seating for 900 – so a little smaller but that didn’t deter me.
We have seating for 900 – so a little smaller but that didn’t deter me. We would be selling tickets at $10 per person and we would make up to 45ish percent from the ticket sales. We would also get 25% of all souvenirs that were sold. (Unfortunately, we would not make any money on concessions because our school contracts out all sporting event concessions to another company.)
We began going through the specifics and financial details in order to book and host the Harlem Wizards. There are 2 different ways to book them and it depends on the number of seats you have. Since we have the lower end of seating, our upfront cost would be more for a deposit. We could cover that however, there were travel cost plus the cost of putting 7 players up for the night in an approved hotel was our budget breaker. Another strike against us is that our projected night would have been a Monday night. Our school is very basketball crazy but games on the week nights do not draw the crowds that our Thursday and Friday night games draw. In the end, the swim team budget just doesn’t stretch that far and it’s a huge gamble, to say the least. Sadly, I had to just file this one away for maybe another time.
This would have been an amazing opportunity, and as I stated earlier, it is a huge yearly fundraiser for the other school… but not for us. Just yet.
If you are still interested in booking or getting more information on the Harlem Wizards, you can visit their fundraiser page. If your organization has the means to host one of their events, let me know how it goes in the comments below:) Good luck on it and I am sure yall will do well!
Speak Soon.
take care,
