On Wednesday, we attended our first PTO Today Expo. Neither Paul nor I knew what to expect. I don’t think either of us had huge expectations to be honest. Boy were we surprised! Pleasantly surprised at that.
First of all, how awesome is my husband to take a vacation day to go with me to this kind of event?? Always so supportive! I’m sure there are a million other things he’d rather do on his day off than to go with me to such an event, but he even ordered the tickets for me:) Yeah… I’m pretty lucky:) Thank you again, Paul!
Ok! Now, on to the Expo:) We were directed into a room with over 150 fundraising vendors and educational booths. For this PTC mom, it was amazing – almost overwhelming. There were a lot of familiar companies like Little Caesar’s, World’s Finest Chocolate, Krispy Kreme, etc. For almost 3 hours, Paul and I walked around, spoke to different booths and got some refreshing new ideas. What I loved about this event was that it wasn’t just about fundraising. It was full of ideas for the teachers and kids. Over the next few posts, I will be giving yall Paul and my top picks from the expo. There was so much good stuff and new ideas. I know you’ll be just as excited as we were about it:)
I’ve mentioned before that over the years I have worn many hats on various committees – some at the same time! I don’t ever seem to just be in one spot because if I find something that would be perfect for another club or cause, I will take it on! Case in point, our favorite pick for a new fundraiser. It didn’t fit with the PTC. We weren’t sure if it’d be right for us to use it for the swim team but it would be super cool to raise funds for the Athletic Department! The Harlem Wizards are a “show basketball” group, similar to the Harlem Globetrotters. I spoke with the Wizard’s representative and she was very helpful. We spoke about our basketball team, who recently were in an awful accident (all are ok!) and she even sent a Wizards basketball home with me to give to our AD:) She also gave me a date that they were going to be traveling back through our area if we wanted to set up something for that night at our school. So I am currently working on this to get it approved:) Watch this space. Also, make sure you check out the fundraising page to get an idea of what your school will need in order to host one of their events. It’s something that you can get your community excited about especially if you can get teachers, school admin, mayors involved:) The icing on the cake is the tidy little profit you stand to make. There is some cost involved upfront. You need to provide the team with 6 hotel rooms that need to be approved by the team (there are some specific needs) and then a deposit. Make sure you read through all information and get in contact with them with any questions or concerns you may have.
As I said before, watch this space and I’ll keep yall updated on how this goes for us:) We are excited!
In my next post, I want to introduce yall to an idea that Paul actually came up with after one of our new finds. It’s something the PTC can purchase as an incentive for the students through the years:)
It’s Easter weekend so from our home to yours –
take care,
~kat
